I served in the Berlin Airlift as a "CGA" Final controller at Wiesbaden airfield. Our call sign was "Spikey", Rhein Main's call sign was "Igloo". Since it was one of the worst winter's in Germany as far as fog was concerned, the airlift would have been impossible without "CGA" "Ground Controlled Approach". I was 20 years old at the time and one of the few Non-Rated final controllers serving on the airlift. On an eight hour shift I would talk down three blocks of 28 C-54's, roughly one a minute. The weather was zero zero and after landing, a Cleat Track would have to tow the aircraft to the loading zone because the pilot could'nt see the lights on the taxi strips.
