LOU SHURTLIFF ON SENIOR ISSUES:

The legislature has to deal with many issues that concern retired citizens. These issues include such items as a fair retirement bill, discontinued insurance coverage, rapidly changing health care options, assisted living facilities, maintenance of senior citizens centers, etc.

My friend Mae Reeder has helped me understand the importance of senior issues. Mae has recently had her 91th birthday. She was born and reared in Weber County and has been involved with the Democratic Party for the past 40 years, serving on the local, state, and national levels. She has been active with human services issues and is now involved in senior issues. She is active with the county and state "Women’s Legislative Council." Also she was on the governing board of Utah State Senior Legislative Committee, which holds a "Senior Day at the Legislature," in the Legislative Chambers at the Capitol. The committee studies and chooses bills to be presented at the main legislative session each January.

OGDEN HIGH SCHOOL HISTORICAL PRESENTATIONS

By: Lou Shurtliff

In 1988 Ogden High School celebrated the fact that the present building was 50 years old. A small booklet was published concerning the unique architecture of the building; and a teacher, Mr. Larry Price, gave a lecture on the beauty of the "Art Deco" structure.

Mr. Price left Ogden soon after and I was intrigued with the fact that no one seemed to be interested in letting people know what a prize they had in Ogden. With the help of Mr. Phil Dotson doing the photography, I put together a slide presentation on the building. I gave the presentation to several organization and shared it with my classes at school hoping they would have a better understanding of the edifice.

Ogden High School is on the National Historical Register and is considered to be the best example of Art Deco this side of the Mississippi. The history of the construction of the building and the artists that helped with the unique design both on the interior and the exterior has been very interesting to those who have viewed the slides.
