The
legislature has to deal with many issues that concern retired citizens. These
issues include such items as a fair retirement bill, discontinued insurance
coverage, rapidly changing health care options, assisted living facilities, maintenance of senior citizens
centers, etc.
My
friend Mae Reeder has helped me understand the importance of senior
issues. Mae has recently had her 91th birthday. She was
born and reared in Weber County and has been involved with the Democratic
Party for the past 40 years, serving on the local, state, and national
levels. She has been active with human services issues and is now
involved in senior issues. She is active with the county and
state "Women’s Legislative Council." Also she was on the
governing board of Utah State Senior Legislative Committee, which
holds a "Senior Day at the Legislature," in the Legislative
Chambers at the Capitol. The committee studies and chooses bills to
be presented at the main legislative session each January.
