M16, is just 3o degrees North of the Swan Nebula, in Sagittarius. The Swiss astronomer De Cheseaux was probably the first observer of M16. He recorded it in 1746 as "a cluster of stars between the constellations of Serpens, Sagittarius and Antinous". Messier, in June 1764, saw it as " A cluster of small stars enmeshed in a faint light. This is by far the one nebula I like the best, and have spent a few hours looking at it in my telescope, and wondering what else is out there that we have yet to see?
