"Angels Watching Over Me"

On August 5, 2002, our son Trevor was hit by a bicycle while playing with children in the neighborhood. Initially, it was not known that he suffered any injuries until several minutes had passed and his neck began to swell. 9-1-1 was contacted immediately and local EMS personnel responded within minutes. Trevor was first transported by Cunningham Fire Department Station 63 with Terry, and while en-route to Aurora South, a call came in to me who was following the ambulance that they had been rerouted to Centennial Medical Plaza. Trevor was then taken by Flight for Life, while Terry and I were rushed by ambulance to the Emergency Room of Children's Hospital of Denver. We would later learn that Trevor had suffered from a torn trachea and two collapsed lungs, listing him in critical condition. The first week was spent in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator with two chest tubes running into his little body. Many times, we were told that it would depend on "his will to survive" and that "most adults, children, and infants don't even make it to the hospital on time". We sat and we waited. Each minute seemed like an eternity. Flying on the wings of many a prayer, Trevor was discharged on the 14th of August, just nine days after the incident. And just like him, he was raring to go with the certain zest for life that he always had.
